Scooter Libby Scoots Out

President Bush proves his lack of morality and values in a stunt reserved for the privileged few. This is the political equivalent of thumbing your nose at the American people.

The Republican Party has had a problem for quite a season, with President Bush being their most visible representation of the morals and values that they have used to secure their supreme stance for many years. Today's decision by the President to commute Libby's sentence speaks volumes about an administration that speaks a completely different language than they are prepared to follow. This is pathetic. Further, I hope the legacy of this administration and history books for generations to come tell the true story of a corrupt America gone really wrong. If this doesn't make everyone vote, nothing will.

This is what presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, had to say:

“This decision to commute the sentence of a man who compromised our national security cements the legacy of an Administration characterized by a politics of cynicism and division, one that has consistently placed itself and its ideology above the law. This is exactly the kind of politics we must change so we can begin restoring the American people’s faith in a government that puts the country’s progress ahead of the bitter partisanship of recent years.”

The controversy over the Bush pardon to me is really irrevelent because in my view its not about the pardon, its about partisanship. And how do you know that? Because Clinton's pardons granted on the last day of his presidency were no better. He pardoned fat cat contributor Marc Rich, whose wife donated more than $1 million to Democratic causes Rich fled the country after being indicted for tax evasion. That guy gets a pardon. Clinton's half brother, Roger, was convicted of distributing cocaine. He got a pardon.

Hillary Clinton's brother, Hugh Rodham, was paid thousands of dollars to get pardons for a businessman under investigation for money laundering and a commutation for a convicted drug trafficker. Her other brother, Tony, got paid to get pardons on behalf of a couple convicted of bank fraud.
Nobody can say those pardons had nothing to do with cronyism or ideology because they did.

What Bush has done is no different. Democrats are screaming bloody murder, but defend Clinton's pardons as okay when the comparison is made.

Clearly, Libby's pardon came because he has friends in high places. No doubt about it. I'm not defending the pardon. But the controversy is about partisanship and for those who revile Bush and feel that the President has not and cannot do anything of value at all, they won't be told otherwise.

In the end, its irrevelent, and merely another partisan battleground on which the two parties can contend for power.

isn't it sad? our government never practices what it preaches. what does that say about us as a nation? i have friends overseas who think the U.S. has gone mad, allowing politicians to hold office who care only about their own agendas and totally ignore those of their constituents. our nation remains divided: the rich, the poor; caucasian, other; employed, unemployed; gay, straight... the list is endless. as long as we allow those "in power" to use our seeming differences to keep us human beings at odds with each other, we allow those same people to continue their greed and corruption, uninterrupted.
